Review
If you haven’t heard of Low-Key by MTL, it’s a spin-off brand of MTL Cannabis from the same Quebec facility aiming to bring consumers craft quality flower without the craft price tag. Considering MTL is already producing great flower at reasonable prices, I’ve always been intrigued by the mission behind LowKey. So far, I’ve enjoyed both Haze and Dessert, so I was eager to try yet another LowKey cultivar to see how consistent the brand is from strain to strain. This was the first time I’m trying a 7g offering from them, but at $44 it was hard to pass up. Will it make The Repurchase list though? Let's find out!
Packaging 4/5
Packaged in a shiny blue mylar pouch, including the terpene percentages and dominant terpenes, as well as an integra boost pack for humidity control. I love the way they change up the colour of their logos to match the colour of the bag, it looks great. While I’m not a huge fan of the mylar pouches, they at least used it to their advantage and ensured all the necessary information was there for consumers.
Visual Appeal 5/5
This bag really blew me away visually. It’s been a while since I’ve opened anything that's made me really go “WOW!” but this was it. The buds were big, beautifully coloured, and covered in trichomes. Colour-wise, these were light green buds, with some purple hiding underneath a frosty coating of trichomes. Some orange hairs here and there as well, and beautifully trimmed.
Bud Size 5/5
This entire bag was 4 giant nugs and 2 little pieces to top it up. A jar with four buds has almost become the standard for a 3.5g jar, so to see this in a 7g bag was really nice. As seen in the photos above, a couple buds covered a generous size of my palm.
Bud Density 4/5
This was really solid, both figuratively and literally. Buds were dense, but still had a nice squish to them.
Moisture Level 4/5
The added integra boost pack was a nice touch and kept the buds at a good humidity level. As I write this review, it’s been 3 days since I opened the bag and the buds haven’t dried out on me yet.
Trichome Density 5/5
These were so nicely frosted, you couldn’t help but admire the sparkle. The layer of crystals was so dense that it sort of lightened up the appearance of the bud as a whole. Unfortunately I don’t know that my photos really did this one justice.
Aroma 4/5
This had a very unique terpene profile, and upon opening the bag you were greeted with an aroma that's just as unique. The smell was predominantly fruity, with a heavy smell of berries and grapes.
Taste 4.5/5
This was BIG on flavour! Similar to the smell, it was heavy on a fruity taste that I can only describe as a white grape & berry blend. However, there were a couple bowls where on the exhale you couldn’t miss the aftertaste of leftover milk in the bottom of your cereal bowl. The fruit does linger though and sort of overpowers the cereal taste. You have to notice it really quick, before you get a second wave of grape. It was truly a unique flavour experience that I don’t think I’ve ever tasted before.
Smoothness 4/5
Like always, this was ripped through my bong. It wasn’t harsh, no serious coughing.
Potency 4/5
I don’t know that I’d consider this a sedating indica, or even an indica at all. I’m going to go against the grain here, I thought this was a pretty well-balanced hybrid. It was relaxing without putting me to bed, and I found that the feeling of music seemed to be enhanced. It was a whole club vibe at home one night. However, I did notice a little touch of anxiety that sometimes comes with sativas. This doesn’t bother me at all, I actually enjoy having a little bit of that, but I know many people who refuse to smoke sativas because of this so might be something to consider if you are one of those people.
Duration of Effects 4/5
Effects seemed to last a decent length of time, but like most bong smokers I found myself smoking a top-up bowl about an hour and a half later.
Overall 47.5/55 (86%)
Lowkey really impressed me with this bag. At around $6 a gram (store depending) my expectations weren’t wild. But they delivered with every aspect of this product: visual appeal, bud size, flavour, effects, you name it. The price to quality ratio on this was incredible. Shoutout to the growers over at MTL because this was one bowl of frost’d flakes was GRRRRR-eat!
