Why do they look like that?

"Size doesn't matter" - a nice person.

Why are all the joints different but are the same "weight". I used quotes for the weight part for a reason.

The weight of the overall pre-roll could be vastly different okay maybe not vastly but still slightly different. The weight of the paper and filter are factored in on the factory floor but could still vary but not by much.

General rule is a point one five variance either up or down for it to still be a passable joint to be packaged. So your half gram pre-roll could actually be a point six five or a point four five. Some companies have higher tolerances for these weights but this seems to be the average.

The size and type of mill is a factor as well, the chunkier the grind the bigger the joint, no matter the mill size at the beginning it will get ground down more due to the processes and usage. Causing more "kief" and a smaller grind size which in turn will create smaller but generally stronger joints. Depending on how they're made and at what point they are packed at you'll see various sized prerolls packed in the same tube or if it's a variety pack they will come from three different lines which will also cause differences within size.

Let's look at cones now. There are different sizes, textures and filter lengths that are used throughout the industry. Most common is the one and a quarter length RAW unbleached cone or the Futurola Bleached white cones. These are most common, there are several like them and are basically the same thing. There are other shapes and sizes but mostly the one and a quarter, the "Slims" which are thinner and longer (holds a point seven five of a gram), the "Grand" which is shorter and wider than the standard and the "Blunt wrap" in common styling is the same as the standard just made of a different kind of paper.

There are tons more but I dont have the patience to copy several stores worth of stock. Each style has a bleached and unbleached option for looks, burn and brand awareness.

These are generally wood pulp papers. Yes there are other types and styles but those cost more money. Generic recreational pre rolls are wood pulp. They burn cleanly, evenly and are dirt cheap. They are also stiff and not very forgiving, they collect resin, wet spots and are somewhat porous allowing kief to collect along the sides.

Joint finishes also have a factor in how the joint burns from the start:

- Twisted with long tail: Uneven burn, excess paper, possibilities of a loose tighten which causes a slight rework. I recommend tightening the tail and clip it off before lighting. Light in mouth and long drags to burn evenly.

- Twisted with short tail: possibly loose twist, uneven pack or uneven cut. See above.

- Dutch fold/crowning : the excess paper is folded in and packed down, which means the end is ALL the leftover paper. It helps with uniformity. I recommend lighting out of your mouth and turning it so it ignites evenly.

- Straight cut: no pack, no twist, just weed right to the end. These generally leave weed behind in the package. Like when you order a big Mac and shake out the side salad, you get joints and a bowl. I recommend tamping them down either by tapping the filter downwards on a hard surface or pushing in the end with a blunt object.

These are the most used styles and will probably be the ones most encountered.

I stayed with the generic point five system even though I know it expands a lot further than that, like I've gone over in one of my past puff n ponders there are large sizes, smaller sizes and multi packs.

For any and all pre-rolls you should be checking for : Tightness of twist, the tightness, for holes/stems poking out and for kief pockets.

Tighten the end, massage the packed weed lightly and tip upside and either shake or flick to disperse the kief.

To avoid resin clogs it's recommended to hold your joint at a forty five degree angle cherry down to help prevent the build up of resin near the filter.

As always
