What were you thinking?

"Who is this marketed to?"

-Papa Jefe

The cannabis industry can be quite hilarious sometimes if you truly look at it. This time around what's stuck in my head is brand names.

In the beginning we wanted to distance ourselves from the illicit market with pun-tastic names like Reef or what I thought was a joke name but found out otherwise is Tweed. There's a lot to list and I don't feel like calling them all out.

Brand names are what people look for, if they like a brand they're most likely to continue going back and trying the line up, if you're brand name is too serious or too silly it's going to work it seems but and it's a big butt if your name is a play on shitty weed terms I'm not going near you.

Terms back in the day and new ones now are slowly becoming brands in this market and it raises more questions than I want answered. The MAJOR one is who are you marketing this for?

I'm going to call out the Batch here because they no longer exist. A batch joint is one mixed with tobacco/ also known as a spliff. Which isn't a great image right off the hop. I actually liked their logo of an orange thumbs up but that's all they seemed to have going for them. They wanted to be cheap and known for that. Most cheap high thc strains are mixed with tobacco generally for poppers, small bowls of cannabis and tobacco mixed and smoked quickly.

The tobacco will modify the taste and give non tobacco users that strange high of nicotine and thc. The nicotine is the addictive side of this process forcing the user to repeat this smoking method over and over again.

The bad brand name gives a terrible message to "legacy" smokers and could tarnish the reputation of the actual legal producers that started the brand in the first place. Other names have arisen that have been plays on the terms used for shitty quality cannabis. Boof, snicklefritz, brick and more.

The terms for the "legacy" market are also huge in this as well. So to take us away from the "ugly and evil black market of cannabis" we use all of the terms of that market in our brands; it makes sense. Why go to a legacy market when you can go to your local dispensary and buy a bag of legacy. It doesn't even seem like a joke any more, it's just lazy.

You could literally call your brand anything and you go illicit market terms. Do me a favour and do better. Sure some have had some staying lower and others disappeared before we even knew they existed. More will come and alot more will go. I'm no marketing guru, maybe they know something I don't. I know I don't like it.

As always,

Peace, love and pre-rolls
